Which animals are active this season?Wildlife activity changes with each passing season here in PA. Specific animals become more prevalent during certain times of the year due to weather changes and other natural factors. Being aware of which species of wildlife is most active in your area can help you take appropriate steps in protecting your home or property against a wildlife invasion this season. SquirrelsSquirrels are the most common wildlife pest in PA and stay active all winter long. Unlike some animals, squirrels do not hibernate and spend most of their time in search of food and shelter. Pennsylvania is home to different species of squirrels including the most common Gray Squirrel , the Flying squirrel and the Red Squirrel. Everyone has seen the common gray squirrel running along electrical lines and hanging from bird feeders. When the temperatures drop gray squirrels seek shelter within our homes and offices to escape the cold. Squirrels take advantage of any opening along the exterior of a building such as a chimney, air vent or gaps along roof edges to enter our homes. Once inside squirrels build nests in attics, chimneys and inside walls causing damage to building materials in the process. Squirrels are also know to chew electrical wires which can lead to electrical failures and even house fires. Flying squirrels are smaller than gray squirrels and less know because of their nocturnal behavior. Flying squirrels live in colonies of six or more and are can sometimes be a challenge to control due to their size and numbers. Like their larger cousin, flying squirrels tend to nest in attics soiling insulation and chewing electrical wires. Red squirrels are the least common squirrel in our region, but can cause nuisance wildlife complaints just the same as any other squirrel. Red squirrels are associated with pine trees and are the only ground burrowing squirrel in PA. Red squirrels are know for their aggressive chewing behavior and readily enter our homes through any openings from the ground up. A few common situations we see this time of year are squirrels in attics, squirrels in fireplaces, squirrels scratching in walls and squirrels running loose in a room or office. No matter what species of squirrel it is, we have experience removing squirrels from all types of locations.
RaccoonsPennsylvania is home to a large population of raccoons which stay active most of the winter. Raccoons do not truly hibernate like bears, but tend to "hole up" during the coldest parts of winter. Raccoons have adapted well to urban environments with a large number calling Philadelphia home. Most residents do not notice raccoons since they are nocturnal, with activity being mainly at night. Raccoons seek out shelter from the cold and invade our homes by entering uncapped chimneys, unscreened vents and other other weak points along the exterior of a structure. Raccoons are strong animals capable of damaging roofs, siding and other building materials in their attempts to enter. Once inside raccoons can quickly damage attic insulation, duct work and electrical wires. Raccoons also leave behind droppings contaminated with parasites and disease. Raccoon pest control can be a dangerous task involving ladder work and animal trapping. By taking precautionary steps on your property such as bring in pet food, keeping trash in closed containers and securing all openings around your home will help prevent a raccoon invasion this winter. ______________________________________________________________________ Mice & RatsMice and rats are active year round in PA and are the leading cause of wildlife pest complaints. Rodents take shelter within our walls during the winter months and can become bothersome when population levels begin to rise. Common complaints associated with a rodent infestation are noises in the attic, scratching in the walls, droppings on countertops and food items being consumed. Mice and rats are nocturnal with the most activity being at night, although rodent activity can be noticed during daytime hours when rodent populations begin to increase. Mice and rat control usually consists of trapping, exclusion and the elimination of any available food source. If left unnoticed, rodent populations can quickly multiply leading to a serious infestation. Unhealthy rodent populations can be a cause of concern due to the fact that mice and rats can carry harmful bacteria and disease. By taking a few steps such as storing food in tightly sealed containers, sealing all openings on the exterior of your home and keeping your property free of clutter will help prevent a rodent infestation this winter. ___________________________________________________________________________ BATSBats are one of Pennsylvania's most beneficial creatures. In PA , bats help control insect populations as they consume their own body weight in insects every night. During the winter months bats spend most of their time in hibernation awaiting the warmers days of spring. Bats tend to hibernate in large numbers inside caves and abandoned coal mines, as well as inside attics and between the walls of our homes. Bat activity is minimal during this time of year , although bats will emerge prematurely from hibernation on a warm winters day. Complaints of a bat flying around inside of a home during the winter months is a sure sign that a colony of bats has chosen to hibernate within your walls. Other complaints associated with a bat infestation are shuffling noises inside walls, chirping or squeaking noises inside an unused chimney and of coarse a bat flying around inside a building. Bat are a protected species in PA and care should be taken to preserve this beneficial creature. Bat exclusion is the only long term solution to a bat infestation and can solve even the worst bat problems safely and humanely. ___________________________________________________________________________ SkunksPennsylvania is home to a large population of skunks and is best known for it's unmistakable odor. Similar to raccoons, skunks do not truly hibernate but tend to "hole up" or stay in a safe location during the coldest parts of winter. This is fine if a skunk's winter den is far from people, but not when a skunk takes up residence too close to home. Skunks tend to inhabit underground burrows beneath decks, sheds, patios and along foundations. When a skunk moves in to a crawl space to escape the cold the sickening odor of it's musk can rise up and saturate a home. Once a suitable location has been chosen it can be difficult to deter the unwanted guest and professional skunk removal may be needed. Odor control may be needed after a skunk has spayed in an undesirable location. The smell a skunk's musk can be eye watering , cause nausea and make breathing difficult. With the proper techniques it is possible to remove unwanted skunks from a property without causing them to spray. ___________________________________________________________________________ BirdsThere are many species of birds in PA that do not fly south for the winter and can cause complaints from residents. A few species of birds such as European Starlings, House Sparrows and pigeons tend to seek shelter in or around man made structures. Nesting materials and bird waste can be unsightly , as well as a health concern. Some birds nest in cavities such as soffits, roof eaves and overhangs. Bird droppings can ruin siding and contaminate materials when accumulated over a long period of time. Nesting materials can harbor mites, parasites and disease which may be transferable to people. Other birds tend to nest on ledges, window sills and on railings. These types of problems can be resolved humanely with the use of deterrents and other permanent modifications. Bird control is best approached with long term solutions such as exclusion, habitat modification and other humane bird removal methods.
