Groundhogs dig underground burrows for shelter and to escape natural predators. They commonly choose locations such as sheds, decks and patios to reside under for additional protection. This may become a problem when groundhogs become too comfortable living in close proximity to our homes. At times groundhogs may be seen sunning themselves or feeding on our lawns. Groundhogs have a big appetite for vegetable gardens and decorative flower beds. Nothing is more frustrating than putting allot of effort into our gardens only to have a groundhog destroy them in a single afternoon. Groundhogs can also become a nuisance when a family pet is attacked by an aggressive groundhog. In Pennsylvania Groundhogs are know to carry rabies and any physical contact should be avoided. Animal trapping can quickly put an end to most groundhog problems. If you have been experiencing a reoccurring groundhog problem wildlife exclusion may be more suitable to resolve the conflict for a long period of time.
Groundhog exclusion usually involves buried fencing, concrete barriers and other permanent solutions to prevent groundhogs from residing in any given area such as under decks, sheds, sun porches and patios. Trapping alone will usually only provide temporary relief against a wildlife invasion. Animal exclusion is a long term, preventative solution that will stop a groundhog problem once and for good. Skunks and other burrowing animals will move into abandoned groundhog dens if left open. By fencing areas off to from wildlife entry, we are able to remove the unwanted guests as well as prevent other wildlife problems in the future. All of our animal exclusion work is guaranteed against wildlife re-entry and is sure to stop intruding groundhogs in their tracks.
How to get rid of groundhogs?
A lot of people ask us how to get rid of groundhogs. Most animal control situations do not have a simple answer. Every wildlife problem is unique and may have different solution to effectively solve the problem. Animal trapping is a proven method to get rid of groundhogs quickly , but sometimes is not the answer to a long term solution. Sometimes while targeting groundhogs other animals such as raccoons and opossums may wander into a trap. If the goal is to reduce overall wildlife population on a given property this may be fine, but usually it is undesirable to catch other animals than the target species.
Groundhog exclusion can be very effective in controlling a problem when trapping alone is not working. Ground exclusion is typically allot of work involving digging trenches, installing fencing and concrete. When completed properly, animal exclusion will stop invading wildlife for years to come. At times it is not possible to exclude an entire deck or patio and multiple animal control techniques may be needed to resolve an wildlife conflict.
Due to the nature of unpredictable wildlife behaviors it is not possible to give one answer to the question "how to rid of groundhogs". Most situations are different and require a different approach of wildlife control techniques to put an end to the problem.
