Skunks are well known nocturnal residents of Pennsylvania. On average they are the size of a house cat and are easily recognized by their black body with a white stripe running down their back.
Skunks have earned their negative reputation through the foul odor of their musk, which they use for defense.
Adult skunks begin breeding in late February to March, and give birth of 4 to 6 young through May and June.
Skunks become a nuisance when their burrowing and feeding habits cause problems for humans. They may burrow under porches, decks, sheds, and along building foundations. Skunks also dig holes in lawns and gardens in search of insects and grubs. |
